DESE 2010 Professional Development Institute


The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is making this professional development opportunity available to teachers and educators in Massachusetts.

Improving Spoken and Written Language: From Research to Practice

 

Course Description:

This Institute focuses on enhancing language skill development--listening, speaking, reading, and writing--to improve academic performance. Participants will learn about typical and atypical language skill acquisition, the foundation language skills necessary to engage in effective expository discourse, and research-recommended best practices for fostering success in the classroom. The summer portion of the Institute will provide the foundation for implementing classroom strategies in the fall; the follow-up portions of the Institute will focus on developing a collegial community to discuss the successes, challenges and efficacy of implementing the strategies in the classroom.

Upon completion participants will be able to:

  • identify typical and atypical receptive and expressive language development
  • define the elements of language
  • describe the complex language demands on students in school
  • explain the etiology of language-based difficulties and disabilities and their impact on academic performance
  • summarize current research on language comprehension and use

 

Location: Landmark School Outreach Program, 447 Hale St., Prides Crossing, MA

Grade Level:  Teachers, Administrators, Speech Language Pathologists

(middle and high school levels)

Prerequisites: N/A

Dates: Summer: July 12-16, 2010, 8am - 4pm

             Follow-up session 1: October 2, 2010, 8am - 4pm

             Follow-up session 2: October 30, 2010, 8am - 4pm

             Online follow-up: September 25th through December 10th

PDPs : Participants who complete the course successfully earn 67.5 PDPs.

Graduate Credit: Participants have the option to earn 3 graduate credits from Fitchburg State College for a fee of $255 (participant is responsible for the credit fee). 

ASHA:  Landmark School Outreach Program is approved by the Continuing Education Board of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) to provide continuing education activities in speech-langauge pathology and audiology. ASHA CE Provider approval does not imply endorsement of course content, specific products, or clinical procedures.
This course is offered for 3.0 ASHA CEUs (Intermediate Level; Professional Area)

Participants pay and register for credits/CEUs on the first day of the course.
