Special Education Law: The Year in Review – Summer Institute 2024

This one day seminar will provide participants with a comprehensive overview of key legal developments in special education law over the past year. In addition to a brief refresher of key points of the IDEA, 504, and the ADA, the seminar will focus on cases of interest from around the country and within Massachusetts, as well as any new statutory, regulatory, and policy guidance issued at the federal and Massachusetts state level. This seminar is designed to be interactive throughout the day with fact patterns to discuss, practical strategies to implement, and identification of developing legal trends.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the distinctions among the IDEA, 504, and the ADA
  • Identify key legal developments from the past year
  • Implement new practices to adjust to new or nuanced legal requirements
  • Discuss developing legal trends impacting daily practice within schools.

 

LEVEL

This course is appropriate for educators at all levels (elementary, middle, secondary).

About the Instructor

Dan Ahearn, B.A.; M.A. in Education; J.D.

Dan Ahearn, M.A., J.D., practices disability, special education, education, and children’s law. Dan serves as in house counsel for the Landmark School. He also currently teaches a Children & Disability Law course at Suffolk University Law School. Additionally, Dan has served as the past Director of the Massachusetts Bureau of Special Education Appeals and as a Senior Attorney at the Disability Law Center in Boston. He currently represents children in state custody as a consulting attorney for the Special Education Surrogate Parent Program. He chairs annual Mass Continuing Legal Education seminars on School Law, Special Education, BSEA Hearing Process, and Bullying & Harassment in Schools. He is a contributing author to the MCLE publication School Law and authors the Special Education Law Overview chapter.
