2 Day Seminars
According to recent statistics, the number of English Language Learners (ELLs) in classrooms is increasing. With this comes the fact that some of those students may have a language-based learning disability (LBLD). How can educators address the needs of these diverse learners? This seminar will provide a brief overview of second language acquisition and the complex nature of assessing ELLs. Participants will engage in activities to understand how their students’ cultural background and past educational experiences impact learning. They will then explore how educators can support ELLs’ development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills within content classes. A distinction between social language and academic language will be emphasized. Instructional models, such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), will be discussed, along with Landmark’s Teaching Principles™, to support ELLs across all grades and subjects.

This course is appropriate for educators, speech-language pathologists, ESL teachers, and related professionals working with students at all levels.
This course will feature an online element for sharing resources and submitting assignments. Therefore, participants will need to bring a laptop or tablet.
This course involves 12 hours of in-person instruction and an additional three hours of independent work. Please note that the three hours of independent work can be completed before the end of the second day.

Linda is a certified speech-language pathologist who joined Landmark High School in 1994 as the expressive language program director, transitioning into a consultative role from 2003-2016. Linda has served as a Landmark Outreach faculty member since 1996, consulting to schools, presenting professional seminars, and teaching graduate-level courses. She also brings experience evaluating and treating students in public school settings. Linda earned both her Bachelor of Science in communication disorders (1986) and Master of Arts in speech-language pathology (1988) from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. She is the author of the booklet, Understanding Language-Based Learning Disabilities: Social Communication Skills, and numerous articles on related topics.
Financial: Mrs, Gross receives a speaking fee and may receive compensation for follow-up consultation work relating to her presentation. She also receives compensation as ASHA Continuing Education (CE) Administrator in the form of her salary.
