Virtual 1 Day Workshops

Cognition, Language, and the Acquisition of Math Competency, Virtual – Summer Institute 2021

COURSE LOGISTICS

  • Event type: One-day workshop
  • Section delivery mode: Virtual. The instructor will be on-site, and participants will be virtual.
  • Attendance: Live, on the date and time listed in the course information section. Please be prepared to be available for a combination of synchronous and asynchronous instruction for the entire duration of this course.
  • Platform: Canvas and Zoom. You will need access to a reliable internet connection and computer with video and audio. Login credentials emailed the day before the course begins.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Learning math can be challenging, especially for students who have specific learning disabilities. Language skills, executive functioning, motor planning, and math-specific visual processing skills all play a role in acquiring math competency. Specific deficits and their resulting impact will be explored. Learning and memory research tells us that multi-sensory integration is absolutely vital for children who have learning difficulties, as well as the best way to teach all students. Methods will be presented that use minimum language demands and whole-to-part, multimodal strategies to help students express, relate, store, and retrieve information efficiently.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Identify prescriptive therapies that are presented within a case study video.
  • Understand the benefits to whole-to-part multimodal processing and the use of  interactive graphic organizers.
  • Create a Woodin Ladder Chart to produce accurate multiples of a given factor.
  • Demonstrate the ability to add and subtract without counting.

 

LEVEL

This course is appropriate for educators at the elementary and middle school levels.

About the Instructor

Christopher Woodin

Chris has been with Landmark School since 1986. He is a graduate of Middlebury College and the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and he is currently the mathematics department head at the Landmark Elementary•Middle School. Chris has published several articles, including a recent one through the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity. His latest book is entitled Multiplication and Division Facts for the Whole-to-Part Visual Learner. Chris presents internationally on topics involving multimodal math instruction and learning disabilities.
