Searching Better: Help Students Find Reliable Sources & Identify Text-Based Evidence

The ability to conduct research is an integral component of the writing process. In order for students to effectively use writing to convey their knowledge on a particular topic, they need to first identify credible sources. However, for many students the ability to identify reliable sources is an elusive and daunting task. Finding reliable sources requires that students develop research questions, draft search terms, use multiple search engines, and skim through their results. More importantly, students need to be able to comprehend the results in search engines and library databases. Finding sources is a challenging, multi-step process that requires both concrete and abstract study skills. Furthermore, finding sources is only one of the many steps. Students are then faced with determining what evidence best supports their opinions and is worthy of incorporating into their written analysis. This one-day workshop will provide participants with a variety of strategies and resources to support students in the research process.

 

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • understand how to use research questions to help students develop effective search terms
  • assist students as they navigate multiple browsers and databases
  • use techniques to help students skim their results and persevere through the process in order to find the “best” and most reliable sources
  • describe strategies to support students identify main ideas and relevant text-based evidence

About the Instructor

Kate Kinsman

Kate teaches a variety of language arts and study skills courses at Landmark High School. She also serves as a grant writer for Landmark Outreach, as well as assistant director of the Summer Institute. Prior to joining Landmark in 2013, she worked for national, education-focused nonprofits. Kate holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Richmond, a master’s of public administration from New York University, and a master’s in moderate special education from Simmons College.

About the Instructor

Amy Veling

Amy is the librarian at Landmark’s high school campus.  She began her career at Landmark in 1996, teaching literature and study skills, one-on-one language arts tutorials, and held the Assistant to the Department Head position in the Reading Department. Amy holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in english education from Gordon College, a master’s degree in special education from Simmons College and a master’s degree in education in library media studies from Salem State University.  She is passionate about research and loves helping students explore their love of reading.
