Language-Based Classroom: Elementary – Summer Institute 2020

Individuals with language-based learning disabilities (LBLD) generally have significantly reduced language capabilities that make learning difficult. This course includes an overview of the characteristics of language-based learning disabilities and the best practices for language-based instruction that enable students to learn and perform more successfully in today’s classrooms. Participants will investigate and discuss the efficacy of creating an elementary language-based classroom, and/or language-based model, that can meet the needs of diverse learners. Practical strategies, activities, and techniques for presenting skills-based/strategy-based instruction with content will be shared, discussed, and practiced as a group. A concise overview of current research in the field tied to classroom practice that any educator can implement will be provided.


Upon completion participants will be able to:

  • Summarize key research findings in the area of language-based learning disabilities.
  • Summarize the characteristics of a student with language-based learning disabilities, including the neurodevelopmental dynamics of cognition, language, attention, working memory, executive function present in their profile.
  • Define the term “language-based instruction” and assess its efficacy in meeting the needs of diverse learners.
  • Recognize the implications of language-based learning disabilities for students in today’s classrooms and define and integrate the basics of language-based instruction into daily classroom work.
  • Explain effective cueing and questioning strategies for use in the classroom.
  • List effective teaching principles, strategies, and recommendations for language-based instruction and academic planning.
  • Advocate for the implementation of best practices recommended by research and practice for educating students with language-based learning disabilities.



This course is appropriate for educators at the elementary school level.



Graduate credit is included in course tuition and is granted by Colorado State University-Pueblo.

About the Instructor

Ann Larsen

Ann has been working professionally in the field of language-based learning disabilities since 1977. Her responsibilities over the years at Landmark School have included: assistant director of admission, academic dean at Landmark High School, academic case manager at Landmark Elementary•Middle School, dean of women students, and language arts teacher and tutor. Ann currently consults full-time with Landmark Outreach’s school consultation contracts as lead faculty with public, private, and charter schools across the country regarding evaluation, academic planning, and program design, development, and implementation for children with language-based learning disabilities. Ann is a graduate of Smith College, with former Massachusetts certification in elementary education and special needs administration.
