Math Bootcamp: Math Review for Special Educators – Summer Institute 2020

Learn strategies for getting students interacting in a math class and learning the content in a non-threatening atmosphere. It is not uncommon as a special educator to be asked to support a math classroom, when that is not your background or specialty (or comfort zone). This course is designed for special educators to face their own math challenges as well as learn activities and strategies they can bring back to the classroom. The course will cover topics from the middle and high school mathematics classrooms with opportunities to ask any level of math questions that you have.  


Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Face a mathematics classroom with greater comfort in their own mathematics skills.
  • Facilitate activities that get students talking and listening to each other and doing mathematics.
  • Demonstrate strategies for engaging math learners with math teachers.
  • Recognize the difference between following a procedure/shortcut and understanding the mathematical content.



Appropriate for educators at the middle and high school level.



Graduate credit is included in course tuition and is granted by Colorado State University-Pueblo.

About the Instructor

Jennifer Sauriol, PhD

Jennifer was the mathematics department head at Landmark High School for many years and has been associated with Landmark for the last 25 years.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from William and Mary, a master’s degree in special education from Simmons College and a Ph.D. in education from Tufts University.  Her doctoral dissertation focused on the creation of a function-centered Algebra 1 curriculum with research conducted with students at Landmark. Jennifer is currently working at Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District as the 6-12 mathematics curriculum coordinator.
