COURSE DESCRIPTION

This 1-day workshop will provide an overview of Landmark’s study skills model as well as practical hands on application of study skills strategies and teaching techniques in a middle school classroom. Specific topics such as organization (e.g., time, space and materials), identifying topics, main ideas and details, two-column note-taking, and study strategies will be covered. Participants should bring a textbook or materials that they currently use/will use with students for the application portions of the seminar in order to see how the skills apply to their own curriculum.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Define study skills and explain different study skills strategies
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how to incorporate these techniques into your curriculum
  • Generate meaningful activities that integrate curriculum and study skills
  • Explore various ways to adapt and micro-unit various skills to meet the needs of your students
  • Discuss ideas and effective methods related to study skills
  • Recognize the importance of teaching study skills

 

LEVEL

This course is appropriate for educators who work at the middle school level.

 

MATERIALS

Participants should bring a textbook or materials that they currently use/will use with students for the application portions of the seminar. All other materials provided on site.

About the Instructor

Deirdre Mulligan, M.S.Ed.

Deirdre Mulligan has been at Landmark School since 1994. She holds a master’s degree in special education from Simmons University. Currently, Deirdre is the science and social studies assistant department head, faculty training coordinator and classroom teacher at Landmark’s Elementary Middle School campus in Manchester, MA. As assistant department head, she oversees the curriculum and classes in the elementary program. She teaches middle school math, language arts and science classes. In addition, Deirdre has presented several one and two day seminars related to study skill topics for the Landmark Outreach Program.
