IN-PERSON COURSE LOGISTICS
COURSE DESCRIPTION
This full-day workshop introduces participants to a framework that supports data-driven small-group instruction. Coursework will begin with a discussion of common screening or benchmark data analysis including an interpretation protocol that informs small-group and whole-class instruction. During the second half of the workshop participants will be introduced to the key elements of structured literacy and practice planning a structured literacy routine from a common, research-based template. Template activities include phonemic awareness and phonics strategies, single word and sentence reading routines, vocabulary activities. and passage reading practice for fluency and comprehension.
This workshop is appropriate for general educators, special educators, and specialists at the elementary level.

Dr. Orkin is a developmental psychologist who specializes in literacy development and supporting the academic and emotional needs of students with learning disabilities including dyslexia. Melissa has served as an educator, researcher, and program director at the Tufts’ Center for Reading and Language Research. Dr. Orkin instructs on learning disabilities and reading instruction at Tufts University and contributes to publications on a variety of developmental and executive function skills. Currently, Melissa is a director of the educational consulting group, Crafting Minds, and collaborates with educators across New England as they support a variety of reading needs.
