Now more than ever, we are thinking about child and adolescent mental health issues in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social emotional struggles often have an impact on children’s ability to learn. Students with social emotional struggles may resort to counterproductive coping strategies such as task avoidance, shut downs, meltdowns, and being the class clown. This seminar focuses on understanding different categories of social emotional needs (i.e. in particular worry and anxiety), understanding presenting issues that disrupt class performance, and will highlight real voices of students as they explain their experiences with social emotional challenges.
Through hands-on tools and multimedia, participants will collaborate and explore ways to create structured and supportive classroom environments that set students with social emotional challenges up for success.

Laura is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker who has worked at Landmark School since 2015. Prior to Landmark and during her tenure there, Laura has worked with children and families with needs ranging from trauma, chronic illness, traumatic brain injury, anxiety, depression, ADHD and learning disabilities. In her role as the counseling department head at Landmark Elementary•Middle School, she works closely with both elementary and middle school students, and their caregivers. Laura develops curricula for and facilitates groups for students on the topics of: identity development, antiracism, bullying prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, comprehensive sexuality education, and understanding their Language Based Learning Disability. Laura holds a Masters in Social Work from Wheelock College and a Bachelor’s Degree from Tufts University.
