COURSE DESCRIPTION

In this 2-day seminar, participants will learn strategies for helping students put their thoughts into writing. Specifically, methods for developing thematic units and vocabulary, composing simple and complex sentences, and writing single- and multi-paragraph compositions will all be discussed. This seminar is mostly geared to writing at the elementary and middle school level, as it focuses primarily on word, sentence, and paragraph level skills.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Define the writing demands placed on students
  • Identify and explain the importance of oral rehearsal prior to writing
  • Implement scaffolded techniques in the classroom to enhance students’ writing both at the sentence and paragraph level

 

LEVEL

This course is appropriate for educators who work at the elementary and middle school levels.

 

MATERIALS

Materials will be provided on-site.

 

GRADUATE CREDIT OPTION

Participants may elect to add 1 graduate credit to this course. Graduate credit is an additional $125 and is granted by Colorado State University-Pueblo.

About the Instructor

Geoffrey Russell, M.S.Ed.

Geoff has been at Landmark School since 2007 and has served in a number of roles. Currently, he is the language arts assistant department head, and classroom teacher at the Landmark Elementary/Middle School. As assistant department head, he oversees the curriculum and classes in the language arts program. In addition he teaches middle school language arts classes. He holds a B.A. from Keene State College and a M.S.Ed from Simmons University.
