Language-based Options

Language-based instruction is an umbrella term for a teaching approach that explicitly builds skills in each of the four overlapping areas of language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Language-based instruction can be implemented by any knowledgeable teacher, in any type of classroom, at any level. All students benefit from language and literacy instruction that teaches them how to understand and use language accurately, efficiently, and with the confidence and independence needed for higher education, professional employment, and positive social relationships.

A language-based classroom is a formal part of a school’s educational program. Teachers working in language-based classrooms are expected to learn and implement a well-planned language-based curriculum for their students with the specific goal of improving listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. A formally agreed upon set of entrance criteria ensures that the students learning in a language-based classroom will be appropriately served.

A language-based program extends the language-based classroom model throughout the day to formally selected students, and it is implemented by administrative decision. In a language-based program, all teachers are on the same page in terms of language development goals and objectives, instructional language, and skill-building activities. Skills learned in one class are reinforced in all other classes, using the content. Student progress in language skills is frequently measured to ensure that remediation is effective, as well as to identify when they are prepared to re-enter the general curriculum.
