This virtual workshop will focus specifically on AI as a useful tool for assisting students as they learn to write. AI is the latest technological trend to impact education; it has both heightened our interest and challenged traditional teaching methods. Despite the many valid questions and concerns that educators have about the impact of AI on education, it is a technology that is likely to become more a part of our daily lives. In the classroom, LLMs (Large Language Models) like ChatGPT and Google Gemini can be used to both boost the efficiency of teachers and help students become more confident in their learning. Specifically, AI can augment instruction and act as a learning partner for students. For students who struggle to produce accurate and cohesive written work, AI can be an important tool to improve their skills as they experience a new technology in a productive learning environment.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Understand the inner workings and basic functions of an LLM
- Compose useful prompts to elicit accurate, helpful responses from an LLM
- Create writing lessons and activities that help students better understand the uses and dangers of AI
- Integrate AI tools into writing instruction for instructional efficiency and student benefit
