This 15-hour, two-day seminar provides educators with an overview of language development and second language acquisition. Culturally Responsive Reaching (CRT) and subgroups of Multilingual Learners (MLs) are explored. Further, this course addresses the distinction between language differences and disorders, with a particular emphasis on MLs with language-based learning disabilities (LBLD). Lastly, it introduces instructional strategies to support MLs with LBLD. This 15-hour course involves 12 hours of in-person instruction and an additional three hours of independent work. Please note that the three hours of independent work can be completed before the end of the second day.
This in-person 15-hour course covers the same content as our online 15-hour course. Therefore, this course would not be appropriate for participants who took this course online.
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Outline the stages of language development and second language acquisition
- Explain how a student’s cultural and educational background impacts learning
- Recognize effective culturally and linguistically appropriate evaluation procedures and assessment measures
- Implement a variety of instructional strategies to support MLs with LBLD across all content areas using principles from Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
