This one day workshop presents an overview of federal special education law. The following key topics under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act will be discussed: eligibility, evaluation, services, placement, discipline, and dispute resolution. In addition, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, as well as the Americans with Disabilities Act, will be reviewed. Finally, sample cases and fact patterns will be used to illustrate the application of special education law to common situations involving students and schools.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize the key statutes involved in special education law
  • Explain the legal requirements associated with each phase of the special education system
  • Apply legal principles to common situations that arise and understand the legal implications of decisions involving the education of students with disabilities
