This one-day workshop is designed to increase understanding of how to identify gaps in student’s foundational skills and implement effective literacy instruction that will increase student’s success with reading. Educators will be presented with research about how students learn to read efficiently and will learn strategies that support the essential components of this process. This course is appropriate for educators at the elementary level, as well as those working with older students who require remediation in foundational reading skills
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Understand key components of reading theory and research and how they inform instructional practices
- Recognize ways to identify gaps in students’ foundational reading skills and how to utilize this information to improve student outcomes
- Implement strategies aimed at improving students’ phonemic awareness, phonics and decoding
- Assist students in applying learned foundational skills as they begin building reading fluency
