We often think about multimodal as meaning “hands on.” How can we reimagine this in ways that decrease the lift for teachers while preserving the value for students? This course is designed to empower educators by providing tools and strategies needed to achieve that goal. Teachers will be introduced to approaches to vary the formats of interaction in a way that will support students’ executive functioning, expressive language weaknesses, working memory vulnerabilities, and processing speed deficits. Throughout the duration of the session, participants will engage in short, guided readings to deepen their theoretical understanding, learn effective techniques, participate in discussions, and use provided time to begin exploring how these ideas may complement their  instructional approach. These strategies will bolster the experience of all learners in inclusive classrooms. The goal of this one-day workshop is for teachers to leave with new tools to support students in their ability to engage and with and master content.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

  • Speak knowledgeably about the language based instruction and the language box
  • Identify specific ways to incorporate multimodal instruction into classroom instruction to support executive functioning, expressive language, working memory, and processing speeds
